Eight e-scooters seized during Orton operation

One of the current priorities for our Southern Neighbourhood Team is tackling the anti-social use of motorbikes and e-scooters at the Herlington Centre in Orton.

As part of this work, officers carried out an operation on Friday evening targeting the illegal use of e-scooters, particularly along the busway between the Orton Centre and the Herlington Centre. Over the course of a couple of hours, eight e-scooters were seized.

While this type of enforcement may seem minor to some, we have received a significant number of complaints from residents regarding e-scooter use and concerns about pedestrian safety and disregard for other road users.

During the operation, officers also found that many individuals were unaware of the law surrounding these vehicles. As a reminder:

E-scooters are classed as motor vehicles. To use one legally, you must have the appropriate licence, insurance, and tax. Failure to do so may result in a fixed penalty notice and points on your licence.

It is not currently possible to obtain insurance for privately owned e-scooters in the UK, making it illegal to use them on public roads or in public spaces.

Privately owned e-scooters may only be used on private land, with the landowner’s permission.
